What Parts Can a Swiss-Type Lathe Machine?

A swiss-type lathe (sliding headstock lathe) is built for one job: small, long, high-precision parts. The bar stock is supported by a guide bushing right at the cutting point, so even parts with a length-to-diameter ratio above 10:1 stay straight and vibration-free — something a conventional lathe simply can't do.

Typical parts made on swiss-type machines:

  • Medical: bone screws, dental implants, surgical pins, biopsy needles — clean machining, no burrs, repeatable tolerances.
  • Watch & clock: pinions, balance staffs, escapement parts — tiny diameters, mirror finishes.
  • Electronics & connectors: contact pins, terminals, RF connectors, housings with micro threads.
  • Micro shafts & spindles: motor shafts, encoder shafts, printer rollers, camera parts.
  • Fittings & fasteners: miniature fittings, valve parts, threaded studs, precision dowels.

What makes the swiss-type the right machine:

  1. One setup, finished part. With a back spindle (second operation spindle), the part is machined on the front, cut off, transferred and completed on the back — no second machine, no re-clamping.
  2. High length-to-diameter accuracy. The guide bushing holds the bar at the cut point, so slender parts stay straight.
  3. Complete capability in one pass. Turning, drilling, tapping, milling with live tools, and cross drilling can all happen in a single cycle.

Size guidance: bar stock up to Φ12mm → compact class machines (e.g. Rui'an 125, Φ2–12mm bar, 10,000rpm dual spindles, drilling Φ10/tapping M8). Up to Φ20mm with complex 5-axis geometry → mid class (Rui'an 205, Φ3–20mm, multi-face milling and eccentric holes in one clamping).

If your parts are under Φ20mm and produced in batches, a swiss-type lathe will beat a conventional lathe on both quality and cycle time. Full specs and model range: https://www.ruiancnc.com/
