Before machining, review the drawing and dimensional tolerances to determine whether turning can meet the requirements and select a suitable process.
Consider the following during CNC turning:
1. Select appropriate cutting parameters. Workpiece material, cutting tool and cutting conditions affect machining time, tool life and part quality.
2. Select suitable cutting tools.
For rough turning, choose strong, durable tools capable of the required depth of cut and feed rate.
For finish turning, select precise, durable tools that meet the required tolerances.
Indexable tools and inserts can reduce tool-change and setup time.
3. Select suitable fixtures.
Use standard fixtures where practical instead of purpose-built fixtures.
Align locating datums where possible to reduce positioning error.
Choose a toolpath that meets dimensional and surface-finish requirements while minimizing travel and non-cutting time.
